The Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA) recently welcomed a distinguished delegation of Honourable Judges from the Judiciary of Tanzania to its offices in Sandton as part of a judicial training and engagement programme organised in collaboration with JEYAX Development and Training.
The visit formed part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and enhancing judicial understanding of arbitration and dispute resolution mechanisms across Africa. During the engagement, the delegation participated in a briefing and discussion on the role of arbitration in modern dispute resolution, as well as AFSA’s institutional framework and its contribution to the development of arbitration within Southern Africa and the broader region.
The delegation had the opportunity to interact with senior AFSA representatives, including Des Williams, Chairman of the AFSA–SADC Committee and AFSA International Court member, and former Chief Justice Hon. Justice Dikgang Moseneke, Vice-President of the AFSA International Court and SADC representative on the Court. The discussions focused on the growing importance of arbitration as a complementary dispute resolution mechanism, the role of courts in supporting arbitration, and the development of effective regional dispute resolution frameworks.
The engagement was described by the visiting delegation as highly enriching and thought-provoking, offering valuable insights into arbitration practice and providing an important platform for professional exchange and networking.
AFSA remains committed to promoting judicial dialogue and collaboration across the region. Strengthening relationships between arbitration institutions and the judiciary is an important element in supporting the effective use of arbitration and enhancing confidence in dispute resolution systems.
The Tanzanian delegation expressed strong interest in continuing this dialogue and indicated their enthusiasm to participate in future arbitration initiatives and events organised by AFSA.
